The intensification of the colonial expansion of the leading world powers in the late XIXth century led Britain to seek new ways of protecting the previously acquired colonies. To this end, the British military and political leadership was forced to develop a plan of military reform in Canada, an integral part of which was the reform of the Canadian militia. British General Edward Hutton became the chief architect of these reforms in the Canadian armed forces.
