In order to ensure food security, the most important condition among others is our own agricultural production, which allows us to fully and timely provide the local population with quality food. The main factor of production in agriculture is land, in particular, agricultural land. The total financial and economic results of the activities of agricultural producers, as well as the level of food supply of the regions depend on their condition and level of use. The paper has analyzed the availability of agricultural land in the federal districts of Russia over the past 15 years, determines the differentiation of integral intersectoral indicators - per capita production of gross regional product and per capita production of agricultural products; has studied the total land yield per unit of agricultural land; has identified priority directions for increasing the efficiency of land use in the country. A retrospective assessment indicates the territorial transformation of the size of agricultural land in dynamics and by federal districts, as well as the presence of a relationship between the differentiation of indicators of the productivity of social labor and per capita agricultural production with total land yield. At the beginning of 2021, the greatest return on agricultural land was achieved in the regions of the Central, North Caucasus and North-Western federal districts, while the regions of the Far East and Urals districts had the lowest average per capita agricultural production and the lowest total return of land. Based on the results of research, priority areas for improving the efficiency of the use of agricultural land have been proposed, within which special attention is paid to state regulation and support for agricultural production. According to the authors of the study, the rational science-based approach to land management in the agricultural sector contributes to the growth of land use efficiency. For this purpose, it is necessary to rationally locate agricultural production in the regions of the country, taking into account the economic and geographical position, natural and climatic conditions, transport and market infrastructure, and demographic factors.
