Resume: The past decade has seen unprecedented advances in new antipsychotic drugs. As well as their predecessors - neuroleptics - atypical antipsychotics effectively eliminate delusional disorders, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and other clinical manifestations of psychosis. Compared to previous generations of drugs, atypical antipsychotics are less likely to cause extrapyramidal symptoms and have greater clinical efficacy. Conventional antipsychotics are effective for acute agitation and in controlling positive symptoms, while they are ineffective for cognitive impairment and negative symptoms in schizophrenia. Atypical antipsychotics, on the contrary, have a very wide spectrum of efficacy, allowing the treatment of both positive and negative symptoms, as well as cognitive disorders. Based on their high effectiveness, atypical antipsychotics are rapidly being introduced into widespread clinical practice.
