Environmental safety of the region within the framework of sustainable development: Current issues of improper disposal of hazardous waste

The environmental security of the region within the framework of sustainable development is considered as a measure to protect the vital interests of the region from external and internal threats that negatively affect the environment. The scientific article examines the current problems of environmental safety in the region, in terms of improper disposal of hazardous waste. During the research, the concept of “Environmental safety” is disclosed and the author’s interpretation is presented, the main problems of waste disposal and the consequences of their improper disposal are identified (lack of specialized landfills, lack of a waste collection and recycling system, low environmental responsibility of enterprises, insufficient financing). An analysis of environmental safety in the Khabarovsk Territory has shown that the problem of excessive generation and improper disposal of hazardous industrial waste needs to be addressed, and the main obstacles to improving environmental safety are the lack of infrastructure, insufficient environmental responsibility of economic entities and low financial support. Measures to improve the environmental safety of the region are proposed, such as reducing and preventing waste generation with maximum use of raw materials and materials, reducing the risk of waste, recycling the resulting waste, introducing resource-saving technologies, improving the infrastructure of enterprises, using low-waste technologies, and the genesis of an infrastructure for environmentally sound waste management. The implementation of environmental safety measures will improve the environmental situation, the living conditions and well-being of citizens, and the sustainable development of the Khabarovsk Territory’s economy.
