The regulation documentation for engineering and environmental survey assesses the soil as a resource, but not as a natural system with habitat functions. According to results of analysis of theoretical foundation of the functioning of biotic communities, it is proposed to estimate the ecological soil quality by the change of microbial respiration activity compared with baseline values of zonal soils.
