The article is devoted to the problem of the gap between theory and practice, which is often discussed in economics. It is shown that the separation of theory from practice at the present stage in the ontological sense is determined by the transformation of science into technoscience, which in a global sense has determined a fundamental shift from explaining reality and predicting changes to applied knowledge, to the benefits that theoretical knowledge can bring. The main consequences of the transformation of science into technoscience in relation to economic theory and economic education are highlighted. The conceptual scheme of interaction between science, practice and education is considered. It is shown that in the process of market reforming of Russian society, a discipline was implanted into higher education that has nothing to do with economic reality. The negative consequences of excessive formalization and mathematization of economic theory are highlighted. The author emphasizes the meaning of economic theory as a science and as an academic discipline - the formation of a certain picture of economic reality and a holistic, systemic worldview. The role of fundamental science in the training of specialists is emphasized.
