Shadow Garden is one of the scenic compositions of the Botanical Garden of Petrozavodsk State University, harmoniously included in a beautiful natural landscape. More than 250 species and cultivars of plants that naturally live in the forest are grown under a canopy of pine trees. The species are from Europe, Siberia, the Far East and North America by geographical origin. Particular attention is paid to groundcover plants and species with different time of flowering period for the purpose to create continuous flowering garden. Winter-green herbs and evergreen undershrubs have great value in the northern garden. Large area of Karelia is covered by forests, so the selection of decorative hardy species and the development of design approaches of the shadow gardens are very important.
