With the start of the Russian-Ukrainian special military operation in 2022, the West has made energy sanctions against Russia its main target, which not only seriously affects the development of Russian energy foreign policy, but also affects Russian energy cooperation in the Northeast Asian region. In the face of Western sanctions, China, Japan and South Korea have made corresponding adjustments to their energy industries. Imple-menting Russia’s energy foreign policy in the ever-changing field of energy cooperation in Northeast Asia is a challenge Russia has faced. This article describes Russia’s approach to energy diplomacy in Northeast Asia in three areas (energy cooperation mechanisms, unconventional energy sources and energy development in the Far East) and analyzes future energy cooperation between the countries of the region.
