The article analyzes the confrontation between two magazines of the third wave of Russian emigration - «Continent» and «Syntax». These journals have been competing for many years. The conflict between these magazines is based upon ideological and aesthetic differences of their founders: A. Sinyavsky and V. Maximov. The «Continent» magazine was founded to unite all third wave of Russian emigration, but this aim was not reached. An alternative edition was needed. The author makes the comparison of ideological and aesthetic attitudes of «Syntax» and «Continent» as a part of general analysis of journalistic policy of the third wave of Russian emigration. Particular attention is paid to the problem of freedom of creativity in the absence of external censorship. The significance of this article is determined by the fact, that, in spite of numerous works about «Syntax» and «Continent», the relations between them are little-studied.
