Ethno-cultural and ethno-political problems of modern Dagestan

The article considers a number of problems of modern Dagestan. Thus, the ethnic identity plays an important role in Dagestan. At the present stage the common Dagestan identity is forming, but for a common people belonging to their own ethnic groups, ethnic identity is of great importance. Land issues and questions of Islamic interaction have also a great significance. The migration of mountaineers to the plains transferred land disputes into the sphere of interethnic relations. In addition, the uncertain legal status of the land on the plain draws the republican authorities which are perceived as supporters of the immigrants in the conflicts. The situation is complicated by the strained relations between Sufism and Salafism, which are the two main currents of Islam in the region. A great problem is the radicalization of Islamic youth which express their protest in religious forms. Many of the current problems of the republic are reflected in the inter-ethnic tensions.
