The article is devoted to the analysis of the Bolsheviks' policy towards the family in the early years of the Soviet state. The ideological prerequisites for the transformation of the system of marriage and family relations, as well as specific legal reforms in this area, are considered. The author shows that citizens were given considerable freedom within the framework of their private lives, which ultimately led to a decline in the prestige of the institution of the family. It is illustrated that against the background of strengthening state power, by the end of the 1920s there is a tendency to return to traditional family values, and the formation of the Soviet family is taking place.
