The article considers the prerequisites for the emergence and political development of the Scottish National Party (SNP). The authors convincingly show the transformation of the ideological paradigm of the party, and analyze the reasons for the growth of its popularity among voters in the period since the 1930s to the present day, explaining the SNP phenomenon as an essential evolution of its doctrinal foundations that influenced the specificity of modern Scottish nationalism. The growth of electoral support for the SNP since the end of 1960s often demonstrates a protest vote against the Labor Party and against the Westminster governments of both shades. According to the authors, the main features of nationalism in Scotland are as follows: lack of discrimination of ethnic and confessional groups; not militaristic and expressly peacekeeping, pacifistic orientation; a course on an exit of independent Scotland (in the long term) from NATO; the loyal relation to institute of the monarchy; egalitarianism with socialist rhetoric; accurately expressed course towards national self-determination of Scotland.
