The article deals with the genesis and characteristics of artistic embodiment of the images of the holy fool and blessed in the stories-sketches by G.I.Uspensky. One of the drawbacks named in the research works, devoted to the writer's creative works, is the one-sidedness of the characters interpretation. For the first time the specificity of the investigated images correlates with the specificity of the writer's poetics. The author of the article traces G.Uspensky's rethinking of the literary tradition in the depiction of the holy fool and blessed, transformation and expansion of the semantics of the traditional elements of the holy fool phenomenon in its relation to the characteristics of the artistic reality and the author's consciousness.
