The article examines in retrospective the formation of South Tyrol as a special political and administrative unit of Italy. The periodization of South Tyrol's acquisition of the status of a special political and administrative unit of Italy has been carried out. The main historical determinants of the emergence, the central value-semantic postulates and legislative provisions for resolving the South Tyrol conflict are identified.
