To the study of wormwoods (Artemisia L., Asteraceae) of the Middle Volga region

Representatives of the genus Artemisia L. (Asteraceae) are one of the dominant components of the flora of the Middle Volga region, often becoming the basis of specific phytocenoses (wormwood steppes, wormwood meadows). The need to study the species of this genus is also reinforced by the regional conservation status of some of them. The aim of the work is to systematize data on the growth of species of the genus Artemisia in the studied area. According to the results of the authors field research, a critical study of the literature and a revision of herbarium specimens in the flora of the Middle Volga region, 29 wild species of the genus Artemisia belonging to 3 subgenera and 7 sections were identified: A. abrotanum L., A. absintium L., A. annua L., A. argyi H. Lév. et Vaniot, A. armeniaca Lam., A. austriaca Jacq., A. campestris L., A. commutata Besser, A. dracunculus L., A. glauca Pall. ex Willd., A. latifolia Ledeb., A. lercheana Weber ex Stechm., A. lessingiana Besser, A. macrantha Ledeb., A. marschalliana Spreng., A. nitrosa Weber ex Stechm., A. nutans Willd., A. pauciflora Weber ex Stechm., A. pontica L., A. salsoloides Willd., A. santonica L., A. scoparia Waldst. et Kit., A. selengensis Turcz. ex Besser, A. sericea Weber ex Stechm., A. sieversiana Ehrh. ex Willd., A. tournefortiana Rchb., A. tschernieviana Besser, A. umbrosa (Besser) Turcz. ex Verl., A. vulgaris L. Of particular value are 10 species listed in the Red Books of the regions of the Middle Volga region: Artemisia armeniaca Lam., A. commutata Besser, A. latifolia Ledeb., A. lerchiana Weber ex Stechm., A. nitrosa Weber ex Stechm., A. pauciflora Weber ex Stechm., A. pontica L., A. salsoloides Willd., A. santonica L., A. sericea Weber ex Stechm. Another 4 types are given for the Middle Volga region: A. frigida Willd., A. rubripes Nakai, A. rupestris L., A. santolinifolia (Pamp.) Turcz. ex Krasch., however, it is necessary to clarify their location in the region.
