Introduction. The work is devoted to the history of formation and development of the Prosecutor's office of Sverdlovsk region in the pre-reform (Petrovsky) (1722-1864), post-reform (1864-1917), as well as the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. Materials and methods. The status and purpose of the Prosecutor's office as a dynamically developing state-legal institution are considered by the author on the basis of the analysis of archival and Museum documents, as well as the works of numerous authors (the method of sociological research). Using the methods of comparative-legal and historical-legal research, the author of the article clearly showed the formation of the Prosecutor's office of the Sverdlovsk region in the context of historical, socio-economic and other objective conditions of different periods of development of the Russian state. Research result. As a result of the study and analysis of historical and modern material, the author came to the conclusion that, despite the difference of views and opinions of individual lawyers and public figures on the role of the Prosecutor's office as a state legal body, further diminution of its Supervisory functions is unacceptable. The article focuses the readers attention on the reasons for Tsar Peter I to the creation of this special oversight of the state body, excellent on the status and content of activities of all existing Prosecutor's offices of the countries of Europe at that time, as well as the need for its preservation and strengthening at present. Discussion and conclusion. In conclusion, the author gives a brief analysis of the role of state power in strengthening the rule of law in the country by strengthening the Prosecutor's supervision, and provides examples of gross lawlessness in periods of its weakening. The structure of Prosecutor's office of Sverdlovsk region in the modern period is designated, and the main directions of its activity are defined.
