Introduction. The illegal trafficking of alcohol-containing products, including surrogate alcohol, poses a threat to national security, increases crime, harms the economy, and poses a serious danger to the health and lives of consumers. Materials and methods. In the process of preparing the article, federal laws and other normative legal acts were studied. The research is based on the use of theoretical methods: analysis, synthesis, abstraction, analogy; empirical methods: observation, comparison, generalization of scientific methods in the study of literature, official statistical data, materials of criminal cases, and verdicts. The results of the study made it possible to formulate forms and present aspects of the use of special knowledge necessary for the detection and investigation of crimes of the category under consideration, taking into account the specifics of the acts through the influence of the mechanism of unlawful actions on the nature of evidence formation. Conclusions and findings. The results of the application of special knowledge serve as the basis for procedural decisions by investigators and the foundation for the formation of the evidence base.
