To the question of mechanisms of autoagressive actions in patients with schizophrenia and their relationship with the mechanisms of aggressive behavior

In the literature review the information about high frequency of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia is provided. The possible mechanisms of autoaggression in patients are analyzed by the authors in comparison with the known mechanisms of aggressive behavior. It is established that there is an essential similarity of these mechanisms that confirms the postulate according to which “Suicide is an extreme form of aggressive behavior, aimed by the individual directly at himself”. The authors conclude that suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia, not having any nosological specificity, is associated with the pathogenesis of disorder, is defined by psychopathological mechanisms, and the risk of their implementation is correlated with the severity of productive or negative-personality symptomatology. Prevention of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia should be based on a dynamic and integrated approach, with an understanding of clinical and psychopathological mechanisms.
