Lead weights constitute a significant part of the Novgorod archaeological collections, and they are found in levels from the 10 th-15 th centuries. A large proportion of the objects are in the shape of a truncated cone, those of round and flattened (wheelshaped) form are less frequent. All the weights have a central channel. Approximately a half the conical weights are decorated. On the inner surface of the channels of many weights, very fine sheets of metal were found held tightly against the surface with the help of wooden wedges. This article also includes results from an analysis of the weights, making it possible to suggest how they might have been used for the home weaving on vertical looms.
