Towards the issue of selling state territory in international law

The paper analyzes the permissibility of the purchase and sale of state territory from the point of view of international law. Historical examples of individual transactions are given. The relevance of this issue at the present time is substantiated. It is concluded that the sale and purchase of state territory is possible only if certain conditions are met: conducting the transaction on a voluntary basis, confirming the decision by the results of a referendum, ratifying the international treaty underlying the transaction, etc. In addition, the right of citizens to choose belonging to a particular state should not be violated, since the territory is acquired, not the population. However, the author of the paper emphasizes that these conclusions are relevant only for the states whose legislation does not prohibit the alienation of territories.
