On the issue of countering overtourism in coastal recreational areas of the Russian Federation

Russian and foreign tourists, both in general, and those visiting the coastal tourist territories in particular, play an important part in both the country’s economy, as well as in the livelihoods of recreational regions and the people residing there. However, the development of tourism in Russia is limited by a range of factors: a low quality of tourist services, a negative impact of trends and personal preferences, transport-related difficulties, as well as an over-saturation of visitors in tourism-related territories, also known as “overtourism”. The above factors lead to an emergence and spread of conflicts between tourists and locals, excess loads on both the natural potential and the infrastructure of tourist territories, and to a decrease in the quality of the tourists’ vacations. At the moment, across all of the coastal recreational areas in Russia, this problem is most acutely felt on Crimea’s south coast, on the coasts of the Caucasus, on various parts of the shores of Lake Baikal, as well as some other areas consisting of large cities and their suburbs...
