Development of intonology metalanguage in Britain

The article reviews and analyzes the metalanguage used by prominent British linguists in their research into suprasegmental units. The author regards different approaches to the transcription of tone, suggested by British phoneticians. The article also discusses their contribution into the solution of the following problems: falling tones in non-terminal syntagms and semantic function of intonation.
