Concerning the role of sport in the development and maintenance of international peace and security

The study analyzes sport as a tool for education, development, and peace that promotes cooperation, solidarity, tolerance, understanding, and social integration at the local, national and international levels. Such sports values as team spirit, honesty, discipline, respect for the enemy, and the game rules are worldwide accepted and can foster solidarity, social cohesion, and peaceful coexistence. Sport is a natural partner of the UN system. It is closely related to human rights that must be ensured and respected. Sport is increasingly recognized as an extremely effective tool for human development and peacebuilding not only by the organizations of the UN system but also by the non-governmental organizations, governments, development agencies, sports federations, and the media. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the sport has no longer been regarded as a privilege of the higher strata of society. Sport is considered an important investment in the present and future of society, especially in developing countries.
