On the issue of the term «oilfield services»

The article discusses the meaning and origin of the term oilfield service. Its production content, place and role in the national economy are revealed. The share of the oilfield services industry in national GDP is presented and the values of the contributions of Russian and global oilfield services to economic development are compared. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the attribution of oilfield services to the industrial sector of the economy, for which a comparison of the oilfield services industry with the service sector is performed and reasons for its separation into independent segment of the oil and gas industry are named. It is noted that in conditions of a shortage of energy resources due to the depletion of traditional hydrocarbon deposits, the importance of high-tech oilfield services methods for ensuring Russia`s energy independence is increasing. Special attention is paid to the importance of information on the geological structure and content of the subsoil for the strategic security of the state. The characteristic features of an oilfield service are highlighted, such as the high educational level of industry workers and the high cost of the equipment used, special trucks, instruments and units. It is concluded that as a result of oilfield service activities, a new reality or a previously non-existent object arises that can be called «a new entity», with the exception of one of the oilfield service types of routine well repairs (RWR), which may cause a continuation of scientific discussion. This conclusion, which has received scientific justification, has signs of novelty, which should be considered the main proof of the attribution of oilfield services to the industrial sector of the economy.
