In this article, the author discusses the way the Orthodox theological, liturgical, and religious literature should name Augustine of Hippo. Te author conducts a historical and theological analysis of the use of the title “blessed” in the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Evidence from Eastern historical testimony, as well as Greek and Slavic Orthodox liturgical texts, is considered to reveal the attitude toward, and way of naming the theologian of Hippo. On the basis of these texts, the practice of calling Augustine “blessed”, which is currently accepted in the Russian Orthodox theological tradition, is analyzed. Based on comparative analysis of the historical and theological data, the author provides an argumentation in favour of a different possible naming of the Saint, while preserving a traditional patristic vision of the theological assumptions of Augustine. Te main goal of the study is to show the significance of one of the most important theologians of the Western tradition for Orthodox theology and to point out the necessity of a correct attitude toward his memory, as to the memory of any saint who participates in the host of ascetics glorified by the Church in liturgical worship
