Currently, there are a little more than 250 states on earth. Of these, 195 are independent countries, the rest have an indefinite or special status. There are about 160 currencies in the world, legally or actually used in various territories. The article provides a historical overview of the emergence of currency, its use at different stages of the development of the monetary system.
