On the question of the genre of the acts of the apostles

In this article, the author discusses the question of the genre of the Acts of the Apostles. Te question of genre is of vital importance for the interpretation of any scriptural text. It determines the cultural context within which the text was used. As far as the Book of Acts is concerned, some various genres have been suggested. Te most commonly suggested genre is that of historiography. Te use of different genres testifies to the erudition of the author, who was able to apply different literary genres, taking into consideration his apologetic purpose. In this article, the author critically evaluates the suggested genres, some of which cannot possibly be applied to the Book of Acts. Te author concludes that St. Luke was guided by the genre of history, but did not follow it strictly, since he was writing an apologetic history of Christianity
