The article considers coastal tourism areas in the south, west and east of our country. This study is aimed at revealing the problem of the recreational use of natural resources and offering the suggestions for its improvement. This can be achieved by taking into consideration physical and geographical characteristics of these areas, natural risks in relation to recreational activities and by applying a systematic approach, in particular, the allocation of coastal systems and recreational geomorphological systems. Defining the term of “coastal zone”, and in some cases its narrowing and use of natural boundaries are also in need, The ways of increasing the efficiency of nature-use management in coastal tourist regions are revealed. These include the identification of adverse and dangerous nature phenomena and their minimization, taking into account unorganized recreation, its limited regulation and refusal to control it. For each territory there is a special correlation of types of recreation, among which health and wellness type plays a special role, improving the health of recreants to the greatest extent. Depending on the current situation existing recreation structure should be more or less changed. It seems necessary to ensure compliance with the norms of the current legislation, in particular, the preservation of free passage to the sea, ecological monitoring of coastal marine areas. The aforementioned will make it possible to use the recreational potential of the investigated territories more efficiently and more rationally. The SWOT-analysis of coastal tourist territories has revealed a number of opportunities for them, namely, the development of new types of tourism in combination with existing ones. The development and implementation of the concept of integrated coastal zone management will contribute to improving the efficiency of nature-use management in coastal tourism areas, as foreign experience has shown. The developed methodology for the study of coastal recreational areas can be applied in Russia and abroad for regions located on the banks of water reservoirs with active recreational use or potentially attractive for tourism, taking into account the natural and socio-economic characteristics of the territory, the prevailing geoecological situation.
