In October 2020, against the background of the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty and the scandal after the publication of cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, relations between France and Turkey sharply deteriorated, during which Paris even recalled its Ambassador from Ankara. Meanwhile, the murder of a teacher and the publication of cartoons were only a pretext for conflict. In fact, the President of Turkey, R. Erdogan has long claimed leadership in the Islamic world, including his desire to strengthen his influence on the Muslim community in Europe in General and France in particular. The article analyzes the reasons why the Fifth Republic has become a priority for Turkey's foreign policy in recent years, based on the latest French historiography, the press, and documents of state and public organizations in France. The probable consequences of the Franco-Turkish conflict are considered. So, the main losing side is likely to be moderate Muslims in France, who are the majority among French Muslims, and who will now experience even more pressure from the state and radical Islamists. The article also concludes that the Muslim Brotherhood is likely to strengthen its position in France in the near future, which, given the organization's focus on growing political influence in Europe, may be even more dangerous for France than the activities of more radical, but politically inert Salafists.
