The article considers the long-term experience of recreational mapping through the example of Baikal region, the one of the most promising site in recreation areas of Russia, where the formation of the Baikal-centered tourism model is natural. The special nature management regime associated with the confinement of most of this territory to the World Heritage Site predetermines the priority for the development of the recreational industry here. Ecological tourism is a cross-cutting direction in Baikal region. At the same time, most of the accommodation facilities (hostels, hotels, rest houses, etc.) are confined to the Central Ecological Zone and within it to the coastal settlements, which continue to exist only due to tourism. The authors consider main methodological approaches to three types recreational activity: health resort treatment, tourism and mass recreation.
