The study examines the relevance of nationalist movements in two regions of Spain: the Basque Country and Catalonia. The views of well-known representatives of Catalan and Basque nationalism are analyzed. Several nationalists of the Basque Country are calling for a “synchronization” of their actions with Catalonia to achieve a review of the Constitution and the recognition of the “right to decide”, i.e. the right of the regions to decide independently on their status. The research notes that Catalonia and the Basque Country work towards their goal in diverse ways. Having faced the rigid and unshakable position of the Constitutional Court of Spain, Catalonia insists on its right to unilaterally withdraw from the country while the Basque Country, which has experienced the extreme expression of nationalism through the activities of ETA, is inclined to negotiate with Madrid. The author concludes that the only way to make nationalistic and separatist processes in these regions controlled by the center and more predictable is to create a legal basis for reviewing the status of the region.
