The study of the texts of Metropolitan Daniel allows us to solve important research problems. One of them is the interpretation of the category of “patience” in his messages to different persons. Having solved it, we can better understand the worldview of the Metropolitan himself. We can understand the content of the controversy of Daniel and the diplomat Fedor Karpov. Daniel uses the category of “patience” in the “list of virtues”. The tradition of such lists goes back to the apostles. In this tradition, the category of “patience” can be considered as attribute, characteristic or function. First of all, Daniel highlights the functional understanding of the category of “patience”. He connects it with “wisdom”. Knowledge and patience Daniel contrasts with active action and the achievement of social justice. One of studied texts could be the letter to Fyodor Karpov, which prompted him to write the famous “Message to Metropolitan Daniel”.
