1947-1948 film documents from the Scientific archive of the institute of archaeology, RAS, as a source on history of archaeological studies of Novgorod

In the course of digitalization of the film documents kept in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences, film footage of archaeological excavations in Novgorod was found. It contains fragments of two films shot in 1947 and two complete films of 1948 on the excavations carried out in the western part of Yaroslav’s Court, Peryn, and the rampart of the Roundabout City, launch of the excavations in the Chudintsevsky excavation trench as well as treatment and restoration of finds. This footage also contains numerous panoramic views of Novgorod itself, its vicinities, churches and monasteries. These film documents complement the information on the postwar period in the history of Novgorod archaeological excavations; achievements of these excavations have been poorly documented in publications and archival materials.
