In the article, the author shows that the Great Russian revolution, which in Soviet times was called the Great October Socialist Revolution, some scholars date to late modern revolutions, others - to basic revolutions or to classical ones. However, all of them consider it to be the greatest event of the early 20th century, which left its mark in the history of world civilization. There is an opinion that it was based on intellectual traditions that originated from the Renaissance, formed during the Enlightenment on the base of ideas of progress and reason, a change in religious orientations in the years of the Reformation. All this influenced the central core of the ideological and symbolic sphere in European societies. Marxism has become even a more fundamental social equivalent of Christianity, as it became the earthly embodiment of Christian ideals, such as «man to man is a friend, comrade and brother». The teachings of Karl Marx, reworked by V.I. Lenin, formed the basis of his plan for a socialist revolution, a radical break-up of the Russian empire, the creation of a Soviet state and a new cultural and civilizational project that left its mark in the world history.
