The review considers the recently published monograph by N.N. Kirilenko “The Classical Detective Story as a Genre of Crime Fiction. Invariant and Genesis”. The reviewer emphasizes the innovative approach of the book, framing the concept of the genre as a three-dimensional model (M.M. Bakhtin) for successful use to the genre of the classical detective story. Adapting this concept to the specifics of crime fiction, the researcher examines the classical detective story as a special type of speech as such, as a model of a hero acting in a certain way in given space-time coordinates, and also as a vivid concept of a norm to be restored according to Bakhtin’s category of aesthetic completion. Kirilenko, based on extensive material, made a comprehensive analysis of the classical detective story, in typological and genetic aspects, and set a new direction for the study of crime fiction in general and in its particular forms.
