In his book «Stone age economics», the famous American anthropologist Marshall Salins developed the concept of the original affluent society. Based on the analysis of modern forms of subsistence of the indigenous peoples in Sakhalin (Nivkhs, Uilta, Evenks), the article presents an attempt to test this concept and to reveal the ethnocultural features of their use of energy. The author concludes that to ensure a comfortable life the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin try to provide themselves with energy resources as much as possible, using the surrounding nature.
