In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, significant political, economic and social changes took place in the Russian Empire, which concerned, among other things, the status of women. This article examines the position of women in traditional Muslim society based on the analysis of the works of Tatar public figure, historian and theologian Zakir Kadyri. The author presents the ideological position of the scientist on the socio-legal status of a Muslim woman, set out by him in the works “Kyzlar dеnjyasi” (“The World of girls”) and “Khatyn kyz masyalase” (“Women's issue”). The relationship between the level of women's education and the social status of women in society is analyzed. The following factors of influence on the status of women are presented: Islamic morality, role relations in the family, level of education, social activity. At the same time, both the observation of modern society and the historical heritage of the Tatar people made up the basis of Z. Kadyri's reasoning.
