Conceptual modeling of coordination relations

The article is devoted to the conceptual modelling of logical-semantic relations formalised by the coordinating conjunction (traditional conjunctions and their analogues), based on two figurative schemes THING and PATH. The developed hierarchical model identifies five typical situations representing a variety of logico-semantic relations between fragments of extra-linguistic reality marked by coordination units. The figurative scheme THING, which reflects the relations of coexistence and non-existence, is represented by the typical situations «inclusion», «exclusion» and «alternative». The figurative scheme PATH, reflecting the temporal and logical sequence, includes the typical situations «initial situation» and «derivative situation». Within each typical situation, two variants are distinguished, which in turn are subdivided into two or three varieties, which are subject to different types of regular variation in different contexts. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach to the coordination means system in contemporary French.
