The article deals with the theoretical foundations of bilingualism. Вilingualism is a common occurrence in the multinational state. Bilingualism or polilingualism (multilingualism) is peculiar to the most part of Earth’s population. Bilingualism is a command of time, which is rather widespread phenomenon in the modern world. There was an urgent need in knowledge of foreign language with the development of economic, trade and political relations. The attitude to the prestige of this or that language influences the bilingualism’s development. Nowadays it’s impossible to live without the knowledge of languages. Today it’s more correct to speak not about bilingualism of modern society, but about multilingualism. Bilingual children advance their coevals on many indicators of psychological development; their memory is better and they reflect more logically, than their monolingual counterparts. The knowledge of foreign language opens wide opportunities for the person. To know many languages means to understand many cultures and to represent several national lifestyles.
