The article analyzes the concepts of spiritual authority from the treatise "Defensor pacis". This topic has hardly been studied in the historiography. Marsilius denied the image of the Church as a political community, which was widespread in his time. He excluded political phenomena from the scope of spiritual ones, and on this ground entirely rejected the church hierarchy. Unique and original refutation of the doctrine of the papal absolute power (plenitudo potestatis) is represented in the "Defensor pacis".
