Competition of и / ы after ц: opportunities and challenges for unification of writing

The status of the language system, writing system status, social and socio-historical factors are analyzed as factors that determine the spelling situation and influence the possibility of unification of the spelling rules regarding «designation of sound Ы after Ц». The author maintains that the unification of this orthography rule will eliminate the letter competition which is not supported phonetically, semantically or grammatically. The combination of letters ЦЫ will strengthen the consistency of the Russian writing system.
