The relevance of this article is determined by the need to find effective ways to modernize the Russian economy in the context of the negative impact of sanctions restrictions. One of these areas could be the expansion of the scope and areas of application of new composite materials, which can be considered as one of the significant competitive advantages. They can be successfully implemented in import substitution strategies in various sectors of the Russian defense industry, since the production of modern military equipment and weapon systems requires materials with new characteristics that were previously unavailable. The main objective of this study is to identify the modern competitive advantages of various sectors of the Russian defense industry, in particular, the expansion of the scale and scope of application of new composite materials that can be successfully implemented in industry import substitution strategies. The article substantiates that at the present stage of modernization of the Russian economy, the use of new composite materials contributes to the intensification of the production of high-tech and high-tech products. Due to the presence of extreme properties and qualitatively new characteristics, composite materials are already used in almost all sectors of the Russian defense industry. The existing lag behind developed countries in the use of composite materials can be quite quickly compensated for by the intensive development of their production and subsequent use to create modern military equipment and weapon systems, the main characteristics of which are now far ahead of advanced foreign analogues.
