Brief history of international cooperation in combating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea

This article touches upon a subject of combating piracy in the region of the Gulf of Guinea, traces the development of the piracy starting from 1990-s. The author discusses activity areas of some countries focused on decrease of damage inflicted by pirates’ attacks (allocation of funds supporting security and property protection, necessity of taking measures for exclusion of environmental disaster). The author comes to the conclusion, that energizing of pirates’ attacks led to loss of international confidence in the countries of the region, which immediately affected the economies of the ECOWAS countries.
