This article analyzes a dramatic episode of the Civil War in Russia - peasant uprisings in the spring and autumn of 1918, which were caused by the policy of food appropriation and mobilization into the Red Army. These uprisings, which were spontaneous, engulfed the entire territory of the Ryazan province and entailed a punitive policy of the authorities to suppress them. The terror also affected the provincial clergy, who were accused of sympathy for the rebels, expressed in alarm bells, prayers, blessings and funeral services for the dead peasants.
