Pendant crosses from Staraya Ryazan

The article examines 81 pendant crosses of the 11 th-14 th centuries discovered inStaraya Ryazan. Six specimens date back to the 11th century: five of them of Scandinaviantype (Fig. 1, 1-5), and one cross bearing a crude image of Crucifixion (Fig. 1, 6). The remain-ing crosses (Figs 2-5) mostly refer to the types widely spread in Rus in the 12 th-13 th centuries.Only six crosses may be rather reliably dated back by the analogies to the 14 th century (Fig. 4,1-4, 5, 19, 21). The predominance of the specimens dating from the 12 th-13 th centuries mightbe related to the fact of prosperity of Staraya Ryazan in that period. On the other hand, somepre-Mongol types of crosses could have been used later on, in the Golden Horde period.
