The article discusses the possibility of identifying a person using automated fingerprint information systems, in particular the Papillon AFIS system, which helps to identify a criminal or a victim in the course of solving crimes in hot pursuit, and also significantly speeds up the process of identifying an individual when unidentified corpses are found. When conducting fingerprint identification studies on the traces of papillary patterns, the main attention of experts is directed to the identification, analysis and evaluation of matching signs. If it is established that this set of features is individual, then the expert ascertains the fact of the presence of identity. In the absence of an individual set of signs, the traces are considered unsuitable for identification. Meanwhile, in order to identify a person who could leave traces at the scene, differences can also be effectively used, allowing one to single out an extremely narrow group of persons or a specific person from among those being checked. Cognitive operations based on the use of differences in solving problems of fingerprint examination are united by a single concept of differentiation. In the process of differentiation, differences manifest themselves as the opposite of the general, from which a single object is distinguished, characterized by its own set of features, thanks to which we recognize this object, distinguishing it from qualitatively homogeneous objects.
