In the context of a rapidly evolving economy and changing demands on agricultural production, assessing the performance and efficiency of the sheep and goat breeding sectors is of particular importance. This article emphasizes the need to develop and apply a comprehensive system of indicators that enables a thorough analysis of farming operations, including physical, monetary, technological, and socio-environmental parameters. Key concepts such as “performance” and “efficiency” are examined within the framework of agricultural production, along with the factors influencing the development of these subsectors, including natural-climatic, organizational-managerial, technological, and institutional aspects. A well-founded list of contributing and constraining factors is presented, and the main indicators of efficiency are systematized by functional area. Based on the analysis of scientific literature and practical research, the article proposes directions for improving evaluation approaches in sheep and goat breeding, which may serve as a foundation for building sustainable competitive advantages and strategic development of the sector.
