Horkheimer and Adorno are generally known as the founders of the Frankfurt School, the authors of the critical theory of society, which is “pragmatized” today by many researchers. However, we often forget that the specifics of the formation of this critical approach is based on Kant’s epistemology, Descartes’ “doubt” and Montaigne’s “skepticism”. The interaction of individualized and transcendental subject gives a new understanding of history as a catalyst of the social processes. In addition, the fact that Horkheimer and Adorno refers to Kant’s theory of the subject and object and to the criticism of the phenomenon of freedom, indicates that critical theory has deep historical roots.
