The problem of relations between East and West has a special significance in the study of the problem of the church schism in the 9th-12th centuries. In this paper, the church schism is viewed through the ideological and semantic background of life in Europe. The author demonstrates the inextricable link of the schism with the crisis of the Romanesque era, the beginning of the founding of nation-states in Europe, and the destruction of the principles of construction of state and church universes. The transformation of outlook, which occurred at the junction of the Romanesque and Gothic periods, was the cause of not only the legal division of the Church, but also the formation of a strong feeling of alienation between East and West, the consequences of which are still being felt.
