V.V. Golitsyn's Crimean campaigns

In this work the history of the Crimean campaigns of 1687 and 1689 under the command of prince Vasily Vasilyevich Golitsyn was considered. It was the first Russia's attempt to expand into the Black Sea coast. The historical background and main developments of these two campaigns were researched, the role of the Holy League in Russia's entrance to war with the Crimean khanate as well as the influence of the lack of experience of leading military campaigns in steppe on its result were noted. The reasons of the Crimean campaigns' outcome, which was unsuccessful for Russia, were revealed and the campaigns' significance for the Russian and European history was assessed.
